INTRODUCTION

Over the years, we have seen how Apple always introduces a software update for its products. Recently, Apple released its latest (2020) operating system for both its iPhone and iPad to make your device serve you better. Apple's iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 updates for both devices are filled with better, beneficial, and new features all for your benefit.

The features ranges from widgets on your home screen to improvement on the iMessages. However, before you install the new software based on the one compatible with your device, you should do a bit of research and findings to ensure the update go as smoothly as possible. To this end, we have crafted out everything you need to comprehend to get started.

iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 : Major Improvements And Additions

Apple has added a bunch of new components to its new iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 that has left many users amazed and wishing for more. These improvements and additions are:

Redesigned and Resizable Widgets

Before now, the devices widget have been directed to just the Today View on the left side of the major screen. But now, you can pull out these widgets and place into your home screen and get other sizes for them (this only applies to iPhones). This enables you to design how your device looks and swiftly access specific functions such as switching music tracks. To view all the widgets available with the apps you have initiated, there is a Widget Library.

The App Library

The iPhone and iPad home screens have been a grid of app icons for several years now. However, it has changed now. With the new software you can conceal the pages of app you rarely use and a scroll to the right will let you access your new App library.

This feature looks like the Android phones app drawer feature, but instead of endless apps on your home screen, it will be grouped into different classes such as social, business, and productivity. The top classes will always be suggested to you including your recent app. There is also a search bar at the top part of the device to enhance you in finding the needed app in your app library.

Compact Siri

There is a new version of Siri and it will not take up your whole screen when you need to engage it. Rather, it is now a small bubble at the rear part of your device. Ask it for the climate condition and the answer will reflect on the top part of your screen. Siri's smartness has been upgraded too. It can pick data from across the web and can go as far as sending your audio messages for you in the Messages app, making messaging a lot easier.

Compact Call Notifications

Goodbye to the days where an incoming phone call takes over the whole screen leaving you with no other choice than to wait till after the call to continue what you were doing. With the new software, you will no longer be suddenly grabbed out of what you are doing just to receive a call. You can accept or decline a call just from the compact notification.

If you swipe down in your call, it will bring you into the normal full-screen call interface, where you can see the number pad and other things. If you swipe up you will decline the call. It also has a learning curve to the swipe but the compact notification is less disruptive.

Improved Search

(Compact Search/ Universal Search)

The search has been updated to Universal search. This helps in showing you the most relevant results for your search either it is apps, contacts, information, points of interest, or websites. It is always displayed at the top right to make it easy to figure out what you need.

Also, when you search for anything the result is being shown with a bold and big font to aid you to read easily.

Default Email App/Browser

You are permitted to pick your default email app and web browser. Developers may need to update their apps to be potent but developers like Chrome and Gmail have done so. Once you have fixed the setting your app of preference will load instead of Mail or Safari whenever you click on the URL.

Sidebar Navigation

The sidebar is now shown by default when you open native apps such as your photo gallery and the photos itself. It provides you with a list of all the several sorting options you can pick from. This entails personal albums, shared albums, and other many media types. It also works with other apps like voice memos, music, calendar and notes. A swift tap on the sidebar button which is at the left corner of the screen at the top will bring the device back to the original full-screen mode.

Find My 'other' Devices

Apple finds my app has been very handy in locating and tracking lost devices and sharing location with other people who use the same device. The new software has included a new notification component for the location sharing part of Find My. The app now entails a new option to receive an alert when someone does not appear at a specific location at an expected time. The app also can receive alerts when someone appears at a location as expected. It will also allow users to create this notification to awaken contacts based on their location and location can be personalized to certain days of the week.
