I t usually takes a village to write a book. This one is no exception.

This book grew out of the ministries of Smart Stepfamilies and FamilyLife, specifically the daily audio feature FamilyLife Blended with Ron Deal that is heard on hundreds of radio stations around the country and online around the world . Im grateful to the FamilyLife leadership for their vision for this audio feature and the staff (including Keith, Julie, Michelle, Kenny, Justin, and Justin) who serve behind the scenes to make itand now this bookpossible. A special word of thanks goes to my invaluable FamilyLife Blended team members Nicole Burns and Shannon Simmons for doing more than your fair share of our day-to-day responsibilities and for letting me cave.

Working with Dianne Neal Matthews has been marvelous. And once again, Im indebted to Bethany House Publishers, editor Ellen Chalifoux, and agent Chip MacGregor for their countless contributions, all of which are needed if youre going to publish a book.

At the heart of this village is my family. Im a blessed dad (guys, I love you) and husband (Nan, I love you). Im humbled by your love and support.

Introduction

H ave you got a minute?

In todays fast-paced world thats sometimes hard to come by. If youre like me, youre busy. Kids pull on us this way, career demands that wayeven our mobile devices seem to pull on our time and attention. Lets face it, life demands. And if were not careful, our relationships and daily need to once again find True North get lost. And then we get lost.

So, have you got a minute to find your bearings? Its kind of important.

This book has a daily dose of encouragement you can read in a minute or less. Its really not complicated. Your main objective is to glancejust for a minuteat your compass and realign your life and family toward True North. Think of each daily reading as a bit of guidance, inspiration, or challenge to keep you on track. Read the days thought, reflect on it, and give voice to the prayer. Then try to carry one point, one application, or one insight with you into your day.

I suggest you:

  • Start where you are. Look up todays date and start reading.
  • Read each entry as a couple. But dont fret; if life gets in the way, read individually and briefly discuss it later if you can.
  • Share one or two per week with your children, perhaps over dinner or while driving in the car. Bring them into your faith journey so you can help shape theirs. Theres another reason to do this: regularly bringing family members together around Gods truth aids in the bonding process of your blended family. Over time this can build family harmony. One more thought: Be discerning about which entries you pick or which part you share based on the ages of your children and the strength of your relationship. Dont force the material; just go with what makes sense in this season of your family life.
  • Dont let guilt throw you off track. If you miss a day... or week, dont be defeated. Just turn to the current days entry and start again.

As someone who has studied and worked intimately with stepfamilies for over twenty-five years, I can assure you that blended families are complex creatures; not every page in this book will apply to your family. But I hope that each day youll be able to find a nugget that does apply. If not, say a prayer for the family to whom it does pertain. Maybe the next day theyll be praying for you.

Want more? These thoughts are based on my one-minute audio feature called FamilyLife Blended , which is available on hundreds of radio outlets nationwide and on social media. Find hundreds more daily doses of inspiration at our website, familylifeblended.com .

New Years Resolution

H ows this for a resolution for the year ahead: Set your minds on things that are above (Colossians 3:2).

Regardless of the goal, the first step is to set our minds to it. Our Creator knows how were wired. He understands what it takes to bring about change in our lives. Whatever we think about or dwell on is what we tend to become.

Imagine telling a child, Dont spill your milk. Guess what that child is thinking about now? You just made it more likely that the milk will hit the floor. A better comment would be something like, Walk slowly and hold your glass with two hands. Now you have set their mind on the desired outcome.

The same principle applies to you and your goals. So why not put Colossians 3:2 at the top of your list of resolutions? Of course, setting your mind on the things of God is always a good mindset any day of the year, but you might as well start today.

Lord, as I think about personal and family goals for the coming year, I ask you to keep my focus on things that have eternal value rather than temporary earthly pursuits.

Learn All You Can

M y first piece of advice for stepfamilies is always this: Learn all you can about healthy stepfamily living. Sure, your general knowledge of marriage and parenting will prove helpful, but its the unique dynamics of stepfamily living that create stress and end up dividing families. So the smarter you are about relationships in your home, the better equipped you are to nurture and manage them.

Seek out resources specifically developed for the blended family. Although advice meant for biological parents may sometimes be helpful, in some cases it can actually backfire on stepparents. Youll have far more success with resources designed for the blended family home with all its unique circumstances and challengesand yes, all its wonderful blessings, too.

Getting stepfamily smart is the beginning of a successful stepfamily.

Father, you know the needs of our family even better than we do. Please lead us to the best resources that will help us understand how to build a strong, healthy family that honors you and blesses those around us.
