Introduction

If you have been involved with a narcissist there is a good chance that you will have been subjected to a smear campaign. The smear campaign is the deliberate blackening of the character and reputation of the target in the eyes of one or more people. A smear campaign may operate based on: -

  1. The release of sensitive and harmful information about the target, even though such information is true;
  2. The dissemination of information about the target which is based on a truth, but this is then exaggerated and magnified in order to create a distorted picture;
  3. The fabrication of facts about the target.

Whether you became a target and victim of a narcissists smear campaign is very much dependent on your position in relation to this narcissist. We regard those we interact with as sources of fuel. Fuel is what drives our kind and is the emotional reaction directed towards us by a person or persons. People are divided into three categories of source: -

  1. The primary source. The most important person from the narcissists point of view. Almost always the person chosen as an intimate partner;
  2. The secondary source. Family, colleagues, inner and outer circle friends.
  3. The tertiary source. Acquaintances, minions, remote stranger and strangers.

Those people in the secondary and tertiary sources (collectively the supplementary sources) are not often the target of a smear campaign. This is for several reasons: -

  1. The relevant individual is performing his or her role without disobedience or difficulty and this meets with the narcissists approval. This role is to provide fuel, carry out the wishes and desires of the narcissist and to provide character traits which our kind is able to purloin for our own use.
  2. The level of interaction with the secondary and tertiary sources is not as great as with the primary, so therefore those secondary and tertiary sources are less likely to cross the narcissist;
  3. The secondary and tertiary sources play a pivotal role in the maintenance of our faade, namely the presentation to the world at large that we are decent, honest, kind and generous people. A view which is at odds with the person who the primary source is exposed to during the devaluation period.
  4. A secondary or tertiary source may well be jettisoned and replaced without the need for a smear campaign. We may regard it as a better application of our energies by dropping and replacing than by smearing.

Accordingly, our friends, our neighbours, the person who serves us regularly in a bar, colleagues and so forth may not find themselves ever subjected to the smear campaign. I detail below when it may be deployed against these categories of people.

A smear campaign is mostly, although not exclusively used against the person who has been selected as the primary source. This person was selected to provide fuel to us regularly, without interruption and of a high quality. That is why this person was subjected to an intense and dizzying seduction. The smear campaign is an instrument of control. It is an instrument of fuel extraction. It is a cruel and vicious method of denigrating an individual further and is used in a variety of circumstances and with significant and devastating effect.

I am a narcissist and therefore I have used smear campaigns of all types against many different people with various outcomes, all those outcomes however being something that I have desired. As a narcissist I know how these campaigns are used, why they are used, why they are so effective and also what can be done to diminish their effect and indeed derail them. I have the inside knowledge on this staple weapon in the narcissists arsenal and I willing to share this information with you. What you decide to do with it is entirely a matter for you but I can state with considerable authority that you will not find such a level of insight and enlightenment elsewhere so readily. I am compelled to write about all aspects of my behaviours, thoughts and machinations as a consequence of compulsory treatment which I must undertake. Accordingly, you find yourself in a special and privileged position having access to such knowledge.

In the body of this book I shall be addressing several key questions associated with the narcissistic smear campaign. These questions are as follows: -

What is a smear campaign?

When are smear campaigns used?

Why are they used?

Why are they so effective?

What effects do they have on you and on others?

Who is involved in the smear campaign?

What types of smear campaign exist?

How do you counter them?

This will be delivered in my customary no-nonsense style which enables you to get to the heart of the matter in an accessible and easily understandable way. Much of what I write will be uncomfortable to read but its capacity to assist you in knowing all about the narcissistic smear campaign and how to counter it is of huge value to you. I do not provide this information from a scientific perspective because that is not my expertise. There are many others who do so and there is naturally considerable value in the observations and opinions of the scientific community, I however prefer to provide you with my observations as a practitioner of the very thing which I am writing about in my direct manner. You may be used to reading similar compendiums about my kind couched either in scientific terms or the language of healing and therapy. You wont find that here. I am neither a scientific person, although I am of considerable intellect and I most certainly am not a healer, yet I know from the many comments of the readers of my other works that they have found considerable assistance in what I deliver in terms of their personalised approach to healing from the trauma of an encounter with our kind. As I often write, I tell you how it is, from my perspective and you as a free-thinking adult are entirely open to use it as you see fit.

What is a smear campaign?

A smear campaign is at its simplest a form of propaganda. The smear campaign is a concerted effort by a person or persons to discredit another person, group, organisation, business, race or country. Smear campaigns have been evident throughout history. They are designed to alter the way that another person or group thinks in order to cause them to oppose or turn away from that other person or group and in so doing assist the orchestrator of the smear campaign. There are thousands of examples of smear campaigns in the past. Some have been continuing for centuries, others are short-lived. Some occur just the once and with others they are repeated every so often. Smear campaigns have included: -

- The Nazi campaign against the Jewish people and their religion;

- Richard II of England smearing the Irish as barbarians in order to gain support for an invasion of Ireland in the 14 th century (interestingly it is believed that Richard suffered from a personality disorder himself)

- In the 1960s General Motors sought to smear the reputation of Ralph Nader, a prominent car safety campaigner;

- The Kremlin regularly accuses foreign powers of smearing the reputation of President Putin;

- In 1796 in the US Presidential election, John Adams was smeared by the Boston Independent Chronicle in what was most likely the first smear campaign used in a US Presidential campaign although such tactics are used now at every election;
