Introduction
Whats the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words healthy boundaries?
Are you drawn to images of testing relationships and suffocating parents? Or is it a picture of frustration because your boss asks too much of you or your friends are demanding?
They are two words in the English language that so many of us strive for, but are often met by a brick wall. Every attempt to climb the brick wall results in a setback, pain, embarrassment, frustration, and fear of trying again. You know that if you could just get high enough to see over the top of that wall, life would improve. However, the idea of making another attempt prevents you from dusting yourself off and taking the next step.
Before you start to kick yourself when youre already down, think again. Struggling to establish boundaries doesnt mean that you missed this vital life lesson, or that you lack the intelligence to learn.
There are so many factors that contribute to setting boundaries, and none of them are your fault. We live in a bit of a dog-eat-dog world, and instead of supporting one another to the top, we are trampled on by the over-ambitious. Manipulation blurs the boundaries we are trying to set; not to mention the state of communication skills today.
Once upon a time we could have a face-to-face conversation, read body language, and understand tone of voice. Today, we often have to translate the meaning behind a combination of emojis. All of this culminates to make it harder to firmly establish our boundaries, and will be discussed in more detail later on.
The fact is, you do have to dust yourself off and learn how to set healthy boundaries. Theres no way around this. Without them, you have no control over your own life. You end up doing things that make you unhappy, or even depressed. You cant say no for fear of hurting someone, and its just easier to say yes despite hurting yourself. But deep down, you also know that it is neither fair nor right for you to continue to live a life that you cant enjoy to the maximum.
But it is far from doom and gloom! You dont have to continue living in a cycle that prevents you from reaching the top of your wall. From this moment forward, you can make the decision to learn new skills, master techniques, and show others that your boundaries do exist. Everything you need in order to do this is here in this book.
Several years ago, I was in the same position as many of you are now. I was working in the corporate world and had a lovely girlfriend, my parents were caring, and my friends were supportive. Or so it all seemed.
My life felt like a pane of glass. From a short distance, everything was as it should have been. But there was a tiny crack my lack of boundaries. The problem was that this crack expanded, and it wasnt long before my entire life was broken.
I had reached a point where I couldnt keep feeling like I was the least important person in the room. I suffered too much when my girlfriend constantly put her own needs ahead of mine. I was doing the hard work, and my colleagues were getting the glory and the promotions. My friends and family looked at me in pity, and instead of helping, tried to tell me what to do and how to live my life. I was literally facing the very bottom, and all too often, the bottom of a bottle.
Depression led to health problems, exhaustion and weight gain, and the confidence I needed to set the necessary boundaries was draining from me.
One night I was scrolling through social media, and I saw a quote that just hit me. A lack of boundaries invites a lack of respect.
I was truly feeling that lack of respect, but the quote also reminded me that while I wasnt asking for it, I wasnt preventing it either. So, I typed in healthy boundary quotes, and the next one didnt just hit me: it woke me up. Stop asking why they keep doing it, and start asking why you keep allowing it. I may not have realized it at the time, but this was going to be my turning point.
I started researching the power of the word no. I looked into how people pleasing was something we misperceived as being nice, but really, it was the core reason for unhealthy boundaries. The combination of these actions, through no fault of our own, causes us to lead an unfulfilling life. But this realization was only the first step.
I confess it took me about a year to transform my life. Psychology became my hobby and my passion. I tried out strategies, and read up on numerous theories. I read, listened and observed. Sometimes, I failed, but when I did, I could still see the progress I was making. I made it to the top of my wall, and it was awesome! A new me is just too much of a clich, and it was not even the case I was the real me.
My confidence grew so much that I started helping others. This was more rewarding than any corporate environment, so I decided to change my career. My goal became to help others, not by telling them what to do, but by providing them with insight into the techniques I successfully used to turn my life around. The only difference is that you dont need to take a year to achieve the same.
My book, Stop People Pleasing , briefly touched on the topic of healthy boundaries, and it sparked a lot of questions from readers. For this reason, we are going to take an in-depth look at boundaries. Not just the different types, but also boundaries within different relationships.
